28 end is fucking nigh

Last year, I tried writing about the books I'd read, sort of like a half-assed literary exchange, but that turned out to be a lot of work. This year I've decided to just tell you about various things I've consumed and provide you with as little detail about them as possible. It's an ambitious project, obviously. Also, self-indulgent, but this last part isn't as sarcastic as the first part. Should you choose to comment, feel free to be as aimless in doing so as I am being in making such a list in the first place.

Interesting story about the HeLa cell line. I'm pretty sure that first sentence will in no way grab your imagination, so let me put the scant text the article offers.

"In 1951, an African-American woman named Henrietta Lacks went to Johns Hopkins Hospital to be treated for cervical cancer. Unbeknownst to her, cells from her biopsy were made available to biological researchers.

Lacks died later that year, but her cell line — known as HeLa — lives on. A new book by Rebecca Skloot, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, examines the extraordinary impact of HeLa on science and the effects of that unchosen legacy on Lacks’ family. Here’s a look at a most eventful afterlife."

( It's the graphic you want. )

HeLa's been used in over 60,000 scientific papers. I'm deliberately making no comment about the ethics involved here. That doesn't mean you can't.

patrick bateman is my 2nd fav psycho
Dear fan person who made this awesome homage to American Psycho, you rock. And yes, I mean the book. I know you're ostensibly pimping the movie, but really, you're pimping the book here. There was no way the movie could do justice to Bateman's beautifully bizarre obsession with business cards.

( Find it really big here or smaller, under the cut. )

I know it shouldn't make me happy, but it does. )

Title: Cowboy Up
Fandom: Glee
Pairing: Rachel/Quinn
Rating: M: S
Word count: ~3000

Spoilers: Up through ‘Rhodes Not Taken’. Kind of.
A/N: I was visiting the glee_kink_meme earlier today when I realized I had a prompt I wanted to make, namely: Rachel/Quinn and the cowboy outfits from ‘Rhodes Not Taken’. Then I realized I wanted to fill that prompt. It seemed pretty silly to do both, so I didn’t make the prompt; I just filled it. This is total smut with a very tenuous connection to canon. Quinn has no troublesome baby bump and there’s no mention of how she and Rachel might have gotten together, because that’s so not the point. The point is, they’re doing it. Also, this is a ridiculous story.

In which I talk about Glee.

I've mentioned recently, elsewhere, that I love Glee, and I do. I just wish I could love it more.

So, flist, here are my not very well organized or articulated thoughts on why Glee is a total tease; that is, it brings me right to the edge of euphoria then leaves me hanging. I don't even get put away, to allude.

I'll preface this by saying that the internets have, over time, taught me a valuable lesson. The lesson is this - I often think people are dead wrong in their opinions/thoughts about certain shows and their like/dislike of a particular character. This is because I have inherent reasons for liking particular characters or storylines and a certain take on what I think is quality entertainment versus absolute dreck, and - it still shocks me - not all of the rest of the world is in line with those reasons/takes. People sometimes actually squee and squee about things I think are absolutely atrocious, and while I know in my heart of hearts that I'm always right about these kinds of things, the admittedly slim possibility exists that they likely feel the same way about me (only in reverse) and, here's the kicker, feel justified in doing so.

Anyway, enough of this strange phenomenon. Onward.

Okay, you remember how I posted about my insane 'I want to ship them' love for Rachel and Quinn? And there was the adorable picture of them all snuggled up and smiley?

Well, thanks to you, anonymous person who enabled this, I was directed to the clip below, where they (okay, I'm confusing reality and fiction again - I mean Lea and Dianna, who play Rachel and Quinn) look at one another as if they are announcing their engagement and/or they want to lick ice cream from assorted places on each other's bodies. It's the gayest, loveliest thing I've seen since Bleighton, and I thank them (and the anonymous enabler) for giving me such a giddy-making event.

Absolutely.

Hilarious?

Oh, fuck yes. 43 pages of funny (to date), and almost all of them are worth it. Seriously. I looked at all 43.

So, dear flist, I won't draw out the suspense any longer. May I present: http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/

Aside from the fact that it's awesome, here's a reason why you should watch Supernatural (only start at the beginning or you'll really be lost).

They play with fandom.
